繫辭下傳 第一章
【原文】
八卦成列01，象在其中矣，
因而重之Q2，爻在其中矣。
剛柔03相推，變在其中矣，
繫辭焉而命之Q4，動在其中矣。
吉凶悔吝者，生乎動者也。
剛柔者，立本者也！
變通者，趣時Q5者也。
【註釋】
01成列：排定。
02重之：將八個純卦相重疊成為六十四卦。
03剛柔：指剛爻與柔爻。即陽爻與陰爻。
Q4命之：說明其作用功能。
05趣時：進退取捨合乎時宜。趣同「趨」。
【語譯】
八卦排定之後，萬事萬物的象徵便包含在其中。
由八卦再重疊為六十四卦，三百八十四爻便包含在其中，由剛柔兩爻的相感相推，爻變之理便包含在其中。
聖人在每爻下繫上辭，使每爻都有其特殊的功能，那麼宇宙人生的一切變動因子，便都包含在其中了。
吉凶悔吝的現象，就是由動而成的，剛柔兩爻就是動變的根本，感變而融通，就是為了要取捨合時啊！
八卦成列01，象在其中矣，
The eight trigrams(卦) having been completed in their proper order, there were in each the (three) emblematic (象徵) lines.
因而重之Q2，爻在其中矣。
They were then multiplied by a process of addition till the (six) component lines appeared.
剛柔03相推，變在其中矣，
The strong line and the weak push themselves each into the place of the other, and hence the changes (of the diagrams) take place.
The appended explanations attach to every form of them its character (of good or ill), and hence the movements (suggested by divination) are determined accordingly.
剛柔者，立本者也！
The strong and the weak (lines) have their fixed and proper places (in the diagrams);
變通者，趣時Q5者也。
their changes, however varied, are according to the requirements of the time (when they take place).
